UKGC to Close Advisory Board for Safer Gambling and Transition to New Research Structures

(London).- This marks a major shift in the UK’s approach to gambling harm, with a renewed focus on independent research, regulatory transparency, and public accountability.

UKGC to Close Advisory Board for Safer Gambling and Transition to New Research Structures

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has announced the closure of the Advisory Board for Safer Gambling (ABSG) after successfully completing its core objectives, including the oversight of the National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms.

During its tenure, the ABSG played a key role in reshaping UK gambling regulation, helping to classify gambling harm as a public health issue, creating the Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP) to include affected voices in decision-making, and supporting the introduction of a statutory levy to independently fund gambling harm research, education, and treatment (RET).

The UKGC confirmed it will now establish a new expert research group to guide the next phase of RET programmes, ensuring that regulatory priorities align with evidence-based insights. CEO Andrew Rhodes praised the ABSG’s contribution, emphasizing that its work helped position problem gambling at the forefront of public policy discussions.

In parallel, the UK is preparing for the closure of GambleAware, its leading gambling harm charity, as RET funding transitions from voluntary donations to the new statutory levy. The charity’s responsibilities will be transferred to public bodies nationwide, with the process expected to be completed by March 31, 2026.
